What Questions Should I Ask a Wedding Videographer Before Booking?

Short answer: Ask about style, what's included, audio, backup plans, and exactly who will film your day. The right questions up front prevent surprises later — and tell you more about a videographer than price alone ever will.

Start with style and experience

Before you talk numbers, find out how they actually work:

  • Can I see a full wedding film, not just a highlight reel? Highlights show the best 3 minutes. A full film shows how they handle a real day.
  • What is your shooting style? Unobtrusive and documentary, or more directed and cinematic? Pick what fits your personality.
  • Have you filmed at my venue before? Not a dealbreaker, but familiarity with the lighting and layout helps.

You can get a feel for my approach on my wedding videos page and about page.

What exactly is included in the package?

This is where quotes differ the most. Get clear answers on:

  • How many hours of coverage, and how many videographers?
  • What films do I receive — highlight film, full ceremony, toasts, first dances?
  • How is audio captured for vows and speeches?
  • How long until I get my finished films, and how are they delivered?
  • Are add-ons like drone footage, raw footage, or extra hours available?

Compare inclusions side by side on the package comparison page — totals alone don't tell the story.

Who will actually film my wedding?

This one matters more than couples realize:

  • Will it be you, or someone on your team?
  • Can I see samples of that specific videographer's work?
  • What happens if you're sick or there's an emergency?

I manage a small team, so I'm always upfront about who will be there. If it's not me personally, you'll see their work and know their name well before your day.

What about the contract and backup plan?

A professional should welcome these questions:

  • Is there a written contract, and what's the deposit and payment schedule?
  • Do you back up footage, and how many copies do you keep?
  • Are you insured?
  • What is your cancellation or date-change policy?

If any of these get a vague answer, that's an answer in itself.

How do you handle the day itself?

  • How do you coordinate with our photographer so you're not in each other's shots?
  • What setup do you use? Mine is intentionally small — a DSLR on a tripod, shotgun and wireless lav mics, and LED light only when needed — so we blend in, not take over.
  • How do you capture clear audio in a noisy reception or windy outdoor ceremony?

Real couples talk about this stuff in their reviews — read them before you book anyone.
